O'Neill is originally an American surf wear and surfboard brand. Jack O'Neill, the founder, has a credit of inventing wetsuit and his son Pat, the leash on the surfboard. O'Neill operates from headquarters in Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, The Netherlands, and the United States of America. O'Neill's products distribute internationally to 86 countries worldwide, some by licensed distributors. Jack O'Neill founded the company in San Francisco, California in the year 1952. It was the first Surf Shop in a garage across the Great Highway. He created a few balsa surfboards and sold accessories like paraffin wax and a few vests. When the vests started selling Jack decided to extend his business to the wetsuit. Eventually, The Surf Shop became a local gathering place, and then the number of surfers began to grow. Jack approached talented surfer and shapers to make boards and wetsuit. Jack designed variations in wetsuits, which made Surfers riding more waves. Therefore, now they could ride waves better in large measure and enjoy longer sessions in cold water.
As Jack brought improvement in his wetsuits new styles, features, accessories etc, Surfers territories expanded. Northern California became a year-round surf zone, while, people were surfing New Hampshire and Rhode Island in January. Exploration and growing surfers opened up Oregon, Washington, and Canada. As business boomed, O'Neill relocated to 41st Avenue, where there was a plenty of room for large manufacturing facilities. As a workforce, Jack put all his six kids into work of designing, computerized operations, promotion and product testing, etc.
By the year of 1980, Jack O'Neill Surf shop had transformed into a thriving international company, dominating the world's wetsuit market. They became one of the leaders in beach lifestyle sportswear in the U.S., Japan, and Europe. In, 1985, Pat O'Neill assumed the CEO position and freed Jack to Surf, Sail and work at a variety of environmental projects.
In 2007, the ownership of the brand sold to a private group in Europe.
